Beetles – Pantry Pests
Tenebrionidae, Anobiidae, Curculionidae
General Info
- These beetles are usually brought home with food that is already infested
- There are over 25,000 species of beetles in North America but only a dozen or so infest our food - they are commonly called grain or flour beetles
- These beetles are small, about 3 millimetres long and are usually brown or reddish brown in color
- Their general body shape may appear to be long and thin to slightly round
- Many species can fly but most often they are seen crawling on shelves, in cupboards, or in the food itself
Where They Live
- These beetles may be found indoors infesting dried cereals, spices, flour, pet food, or other packaged foods
- The first sign of infestation usually comes when you see a stray beetle or two in the pantry or cabinets – look for the source, usually a dry food like flour or cereal
What They Want From You
- These beetles want food and a place to lay their eggs
Why They’re A Problem
- They both consume and contaminate the dry packaged foods that they infest
Tips For Limiting Entry and Avoiding Future Problems
- Find and remove any infested pantry items (be sure to bag and seal any infested items before removal)
- Clean your pantry thoroughly, taking special care to remove any dried food spills on shelves and in cracks
- Store food in sealed containers
